Abstract

Purposes: This study is aimed to evaluate the effects of a group program applying reality therapy on the aged person¢¥s depression, self-control, and their coping strategies with stress. Methods: The subject of this study consisted of 36 aged people who were suspected to have depression between the ages of Wand 75 who live in their respective home. They were divided into an experimental group (16 persons) and a control group (20 persons). The group program was applied on the experimental group once a week totaling 8 times. The levels of depression and the ability of self-control and coping stress were measured before and after applying program. The same variables were measured for the control group on which the group program was , not applied. Measurement tools used in this study were GDS-K, Korean version of Self-Control-Schedule (SCS), and Stress coping strategy scale made by Jung-Hee Kim and Jang-Ho Lee(1985). Results: 1. Depression level was significantly decreased in thexperimental group after applying group program, whereas the control group did not show any meaning difference. There was a significant difference between the two groups after applying group program. 2. The score of Self-control was significantly increased in the experimental group after the application of group program. The control group showed no significant change. A significant difference between the two groups was revealed after applying group program. 3. In the way of coping stress, the problem-centered and socially supported attitudes were increased and emotion-centered attitude and expecting way of thinking were decreased in the experimental group. But control group did not show any significant difference. There was a significant difference between the two groups. Conclusions: The results suggest that the group ¢¥ program applying reality therapy is an effective intervention for reducing depression and increasing self-control level and may effectively be utilized as an effective arbitrating program for improving the problem-centered and socially-supported attitudes and reducing the emotion-centered attitude and expecting way of thinking in dealing with stress on the elderly who reside at home in the community.
